We have become very good at filling every empty second.
If we are waiting for someone, we reach for our phones. If a series becomes slightly boring, we scroll at the same time. If we have ten minutes before leaving the house, we quickly answer an email. There is always something else we could be doing, and sometimes even rest has started to feel like another task we need to get right.
A better morning routine, a better evening routine, more steps, more productivity, more habits, more goals. We are constantly trying to become a slightly better version of ourselves, and somewhere in between all of that, simply being still has become strangely uncomfortable.
But slowing down doesn’t mean disappearing from your life for an entire weekend. Sometimes it is much smaller. It can be drinking your coffee before checking your phone, taking ten minutes before bed to write down what is on your mind, coloring while music plays in the background, sitting next to someone you love without needing to fill the silence, or going for a walk without turning it into a workout.
There is something special about moments in which our hands are busy but our minds finally have room to breathe. You begin coloring one small detail, then another. At first, your mind is still noisy. You think about the laundry, tomorrow’s meeting, or something somebody said earlier that day. And then, without really noticing when it happens, you become absorbed in what is right in front of you: the page, the colors, the moment.
That is what slowing down can look like. It doesn’t mean your responsibilities disappear. The emails will still be there, the washing machine will still need to be emptied, and tomorrow will still arrive. But for a little while, they don’t need you.
We also spend so much of our day consuming other people’s lives. Their houses, their relationships, their pregnancies, their parenting, their careers, their morning routines, their success. Sometimes we are so busy watching everybody else’s life happen that we forget to notice our own.
And maybe that is why reflection matters. Not because every thought needs to become something profound, but because taking a moment to notice how we actually feel can bring us back to ourselves. Journaling can be as simple as writing, Today was hard. I laughed when… I never want to forget this. I’m proud of myself for… Right now, I need… It doesn’t have to be more than that.
At Motherkofing, we believe there is value in creating little pauses inside ordinary life. Not waiting until everything becomes calm, because it probably never will, but finding small pockets of calm while life is still happening. A page before bed, twenty minutes on a Sunday afternoon, a cup of coffee while the house is quiet, or a moment in which nobody needs anything from you.
Life will continue moving quickly. There will always be another milestone, another goal and another chapter waiting for you. But you don’t have to rush through every page to reach the next one. Sometimes you are allowed to stay here for a while.
Life moves quickly. You don’t always have to.
